Outpatient Surgery Center- Planning Your Visit

Instructions Before Outpatient Surgery (not requiring staying in the hospital overnight).

You will be given a time of arrival by your surgeon’s office. You should arrive at Outpatient Surgery at that time.

The day before your surgery, you should not eat or drink after midnight as a general rule, but be aware your doctor may have special instructions. Be sure to follow any specific instructions given to you by your surgeon or health team professional about your medications. Contact your doctor if there are any changes to your health such as a cold, fever, chills or other illness.

You cannot drive yourself home following a surgical procedure so be sure to make transportation arrangements prior to the day of surgery.

Things to Remember the Morning of Surgery

  • Please do not wear any makeup, including lipstick, mascara, finger, or toe nail polish
  • If you have long hair, braid it or pull it back with a rubber band
  • Wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes
  • If necessary, bring crutches or a walker
  • Please do not wear any jewelry
  • Please leave all valuables at home (i.e., money)
  • Remove glasses, contact lenses and dentures prior to surgery

What To Expect On Surgery Day

  • You will need to check in at the front desk of Outpatient Surgery at your scheduled time
  • When it is surgical time, you will be asked to change into a hospital gown
  • Wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes
  • Remove glasses, contact lenses and dentures prior to surgery
  • The preoperative area cannot be responsible for any valuables

After Surgery
Following surgery, patients are admitted to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), where critical care is provided to patients recovering from anesthesia. When patients are awake and able to sit up, they are admitted to the outpatient second stage observation area. At this time, one family member may come to the observation area to visit.

After surgery, the surgeon will speak with the waiting family regarding the surgical outcome.
