Long Beach Memorial provides innovative services and an extensive continuum for victims of brain injury that includes serving as a member of the regional trauma service and offering 24-hour neurosurgical and trauma intervention as well as access to the area's finest physicians and most sophisticated treatment.

Specialized programs have been designed at all levels, ranging from the Sensory Stimulation Program for slow-to-recover patients to the Brain Injury Program that focuses on wellness and community reintegration. Other unique features include the Spasticity Clinic, Balance and Vestibular Center, Outpatient Neuro-Rehabilitation, as well as support groups and family education groups. Transitional Rehabilitation Services, a post-acute residential and day treatment program, is the only hospital-sponsored program of its kind in Southern California.

Typical diagnoses accepted include brain injury as a result of trauma, anoxia, cerebral aneurysm, encephalopathy or arteriovenous malformation.

"Patients are quickly advanced to the appropriate level, resulting in timely transition back to the community." Internal case management ensures coordination of each case throughout the rehabilitation stay, providing a consistent liaison with external case managers, insurance adjusters and family members. Family involvement is pivotal in achieving treatment results. Prudent and appropriate use of resources is also emphasized.

Outcome data from the Functional Independence Measure, a nationally recognized instrument, have demonstrated that Memorial Hospital's treatment effectiveness has outpaced regional and national standards, while maintaining high levels of patient and family satisfaction.
